Villagers: 750 Years of Life in an English Village (Paperback)

I have lived in Gamlingay for 4 years now and realized that I didn't know a thing about where I lived.
I picked this book up at Christmas thinking that it would be similar to the numerous small village histories that just about every English village has, which although are well intentioned are normally poorly written and rather dull.
I am pleased to say I was more than pleasantly surprised from the moment I started reading it. Its more that just a limited history of Gamlingay, in fact its a well researched book which enlightens the reader on the different periods of English history from the 13th century to effectively the Victorian period.
James Brown's style is easy on the eye and has much similarity with Bill Bryson's more historical works, both in the clever use of humor and the high standard of research.
All in all this is a great little book both for residents of Gamlingay and anyone else interested in English history I have given it 4 stars purely on a personal preference for more pictures and maps. I would also of liked more on Gamlingay's involvement in the world wars. ****
